Murals by local, international, and national artists adorn the streets of Kansas City’s downtown. As we make our way across the east and west Crossroads Arts Districts, we’ll pass through fascinating passageways, ascend to an unexpected rooftop, and take in as many murals as we can on the Kansas City mural tour.
You can’t help but be drawn in by all the brilliant color and art that fills Artist Alley. It’s possible that an artist will be working on something during the trip. These murals are always changing, so be sure that you book another if you decide you like it. The artists are always working on something and trying to top the last.
One block from the Crossroads streetcar stop and with plenty of free on-street parking nearby, this tour begins and concludes at a unique little coffee shop. Early arrival is encouraged to support the businesses in our community. We’ll check out the street art (ghost signage and graffiti murals) before making our way back west on the other side of Main Street.
You should expect to acquire some of the jargon, such as “bubble letters,” “splash,” and “fading and lacing”, at each stop. The muralist who painted it, as well as the story behind parts of the artwork, may be discussed at times. In many cases, it is up to you, the spectator, to interpret the meaning and expression of the work. Is it something that resonates with you? What do you believe the artist was attempting to convey in this piece? The pieces will certainly provoke thought.
You’ll never see the same thing twice on this trip because the art is continually changing.
